National Sex Offender Registry

Free Consultation

On May 17, 1996, the federal version of Megan's Law was enacted. Authored by Congressman Dick Zimmer, it requires every state to develop a sex offender registry procedure for notifying concerned people when a person convicted of certain crimes is released near their homes. The law has been amended several times since the original bill was passed, and different states have different procedures for making the required disclosures.

USA-FACT's National Sex Offender Registry contains information regarding registered sex offenders from all 50 U.S. states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. This search accesses public information from each state, or local governmental agencies within a state, regarding the presence or location of offenders, who have been convicted of sexually-related offenses and required to register with their state's sex offender registry. Results vary by state but typically include: full name of the offender, classification of the offense, and last known address. Data may also include: birth date, personal description, known aliases and offenses, scars or other markings, photos, and former address. A detailed description of what is provided by each state is available upon request.

Important National Sex Offender Registry Notes:

  • There may be state law limitations on how an employer can legally use information from a specific state or local registry that is included in our National Sex Offender Registry search. An employer should establish with its legal counsel, and follow, a corporate directive on the proper use of this information.
  • Some states (e.g., Nevada, California, etc) restrict or limit the use of their official statewide sex offender registry for employment purposes.
  • The National Sex Offender Registry does not contain information on all convicted sex offenders. Some registries included in the National Sex Offender Registry provide information only for sex offenders that are assessed to be a higher risk factor to the public.
  • It is highly recommended that you consult with legal counsel to establish policies regarding the proper use of this information in your organization.
