Most employment verification services are processed via a call center where trained telephone operators call employers and ask a series of questions of the employer about their former employee and document the results in the report, but over the past five years a few 900 Number Services, the best known being “The Work Number” began changing the way some employers provide references. The Work Number and a handful of competitors began purchasing the databases of former employee information from the larger employers in the country. They created a large database of former employees that they charge to access when performing employment verifications. Access to these 900 number services are at an additional fee to the client for verification information.
